Wedding Music – First Dances
Wedding music is such a personal choice and many couples don’t know where to start.
Working in the wedding industry we are often asked by couples “Do we have to have a first dance? What should we choose? Can you play our first dance for us?”
The First Dance
This is definitely a song choice that is super-personal. It needs to be a song that you both love and that means something to you. Perhaps the song that was playing when you first met, had your first date, came on the radio when you were driving somewhere special, was your holiday song or is just something a little different or it has lyrics in that just touch the very heart of you and sums up your relationship perfectly.
Remember you have to do your first dance in front of all of your guests so pick a song that you are comfortable with.
If you can dance a little or are accomplished dancers and you want to enhance the first dance with a choreographed routine there are dancing lessons available for couples who want some help and guidance. These dance lessons are quite popular and can be taught on a one to one basis or as part of a group. However, they can also be quite difficult for people who really do have two left feet – if this is you then the thought of dancing may fill you with dread..
If this sounds like you, then don’t risk it – the steps may be too much to remember if you feel under pressure. It’s your wedding day and its supposed to be hugely enjoyable so don’t put obstacles in your way to make it more difficult! You don’t HAVE to have a first dance – if it really is something you don’t want to do then don’t do it! Lots of couples choose not to have a first dance.
But, if you feel you HAVE to have a dance, choose a song where you can hold your partner close, shuffle from side to side expertly and encourage your guests to join you on the dance-floor as soon as possible. Pre-warn your best man, bridesmaids, relatives to join you as soon as possible when the song starts.
If you can dance – pick something where you can bust out some moves and impress everyone with your dance prowess! Take some extra dance classes. Swing dancing is a popular dance choice and there are clubs and classes all over the UK. You can start anytime and it’s something you can continue to do together after your wedding!
Here are a few first dance suggestions but remember to choose one that you BOTH love. Maybe spend a couple of romantic evenings playing through your CD collections to find a song that you both agree sums you up perfectly. You’ll have lots of fun at the same time and get to know about each other even more.

Doctor Chocolate are often asked if we can play the first dance. Of course we can do this but we do have to make a charge. The charge covers the purchase of the music for the band and cost of the rehearsal venue. We want to make sure that we do an excellent job of playing your first dance so we would need to have a full band rehearsal to run it a few times before we perform it at your wedding. Please let us know at the time of booking if you want us to play your first dance.
Alternatively we would recommend downloading your first dance to our ipod. We can introduce your first dance, call your guests to attention so that they are ready for your grand entrance and wait for the song to play. We would remain on stage whilst the song was playing through the ipod and, as soon as the song ends, we would begin our first set immediately and get the party started!
Contact Doctor Chocolate if you want an awesome party covers band for your wedding.
